Am now in my college apartment! Moving in was, in polite terms, An Adventure.

This is not any of the things I /should/ be writing right now, but I haven’t been having any luck on any of those, so, here you go.

Because I finished Raising Steam today and thought, “…did Vimes know? He /had/ to have known.”

You know, that “fairy tales are full of magical bullshit” post makes me think. Fairy tales and fantasy stories have Artifacts of Power tumbling out of the cupboards and clogging the drains. Millions of the fucking things just everywhere.

Which means someone has to make them. Swords that glow in the presence of evil and vials of liquid that change color when someone dies don’t just /happen/, you know.

Title: Filling the Cracks

Post-TWS. Natasha goes by the grave, sometimes. Maybe she's looking for reasons. (Maybe not, but she gets them anyway.)

For [personal profile] veleda_k. Vel, you've helped me get through a lot of horrible stuff over the last six months. I can't really say thank you, enough. Instead, have a fic.

so I was rambling on tumblr about how no one other than me ships Izumi Curtis and Olivia Armstrong from FMA, and managing to convince a few other people to my cause. I then got this message in my askbox:

duskwightscholar
asked: izumi and olivia getting close after the armstrong-curtis-take-down-sloth-alliance. sig dying of something, izumi lays on olivia for support in these times because izumi loved him and misses him dearly, and olivia's been in love with izumi for a long time so yeah, but then a few years later izumi just flat out asks olivia out and ye"

And then fic happened. I do not have a title for it, but i like it anyway.

Takes place shortly after this story.

Yeah, it’s a series now apparently. This is, again, more or less unedited.

Final Fantasy 7/Bravely Default fusion

Last week, the Chief disappeared into a Turk van, and Jackal knew what that meant.

I had a snow day today. And the thought "Wow, Khint would make an awesome Turk" has been in my head lately, so I sort of splorted something out. It is more or less unedited.

Last week on my tumblr, I asked for femslash drabble prompts.

Edmondia responded with “I want to say cute bitties Agnes/Olivia but I also don’t want spoilers and haven’t started chapter five yet.”

It is not quite a drabble, but nevertheless. Agnès/Olivia, pregame, a total lack of spoilers. Just adorable teen girls with crushes and a slice of time to themselves.

One of the really fascinating things Bravely Default does is take rules that in most fantasy stories would be perfectly safe - anything the other side tells you is a lie (because they're bad guys, come on), battles are philosophical conflicts and no one needs to talk to each other to discover the truth, you will have a mystical guide that will lead you to your destiny. Fairly standard Rules of Sword and Sorcery fantasy. We know how these stories go.

But in this case those rules backfire - the characters know how those stories go too, and that's what get used against them. Because human beings /believe/ in stories, more than we believe in facts. Human beings need narrative, and we tend to place ourselves in the slot of Chosen One at the beginning of our Hero's Joureny. At worst, we'll be a contributor the Great Cause. Everyone wants to be important, and any politician or propagandist knows it and knows how to manipulate it.

Frame the facts in the right narrative, and you can get people to believe whatever you want. They'll maintain it themselves, even, once they're invested in it, and ignore any possible flaws in the story. Wonder how politicians can take the exact same facts and get completely different responses out of them? It's because they're fitting the information into different narrative contexts. They may even believe it whole heartedly, because they have their own stories too, but not always.  Sometimes it's just manipulation, knowing the narratives that get the right response out of people.

Bravely Default takes the fantasy narrative and turns it against itself, takes the human need for the Hero's Quest and shows how easily it can be manipulated. Human beings need stories, but it's very important to know who's telling the tale.

Fandom is like found art.

Found art works kind of like this: wandering about your every day life, you find a thing. Maybe it's a piece of worn wood, twisted in interesting directions. Maybe it's a rusted bolt, age and damage giving it texture and character. Maybe it's a rock, split with cracks but holding together somehow. Whatever it is, it's compelling. Something about the shape or the color or the texture of it makes you stop and pick it up, thinking, "Huh, I could do something with this..."

So you do. You suspend the ancient bolt among its newer brethren or wrap the wood in twisted wire or carefully, carefully pull the rock apart to see what's inside. Maybe you put the bolt through the wood or trace the rock's cracks in neon paint. But you emphasize rather than  disguise - sure, you /could/ sand the wood clean, or clean the rust off the bolt, or glue the rock back together, but then, what's the point? Take away the flaws and uniqueness, and then whatever you found so fascinating isn't there anymore. You want to champion the interesting features, not erase them.

Fandom - fanfiction and fanart - are a bit like that. Only with stories, or characters, or relationships,  or settings. You come across a story, something compelling somehow, and you want to make something new out of it. You want to see what a character is like in a different setting, or zoom in a particular figure in the background, or move a couple of people around because they clearly belong next to each other. You take what you find and make into something new and interesting.

It's art. And it's pretty cool.

I'm kind of angry now.

Session on Monday? I was talking about my career and he talked about how important networking was, and I quipped that networking was hard when you have social anxiety.

Fucker had the /gall/ to call anxiety an "excuse".

for one of my classes, we're doing a project. and for my project I wanted to do engineering analysis of bone. I got some deer legs, but my prof wants them to be clean before they come into the lab, so I'm doing that now.

I was pulling them out of the oven where I was boiling them, when one of my roommates' best friends (who has been irritatingly friendly to me this whole semester, coming to talk to me despite very clear "fuck off" signals) came over asked me what I was doing.

So I told her. I explained the experiment that I was doing (seeing how vibrations transfer through bone) and that I really /wanted/ to do human bone but couldn't get any.... by the end (and especially at the part where I told her it's legal to buy human bone) she had that alarmde slightly-too-wide look in her eyes.

I may or may not be cackling a bit now. She's insisted on getting to know me this whole time.... not my fault if what she finds isn't what she expected.

It was weird. I sort of splorted my personal history everywhere in a disorganized mess. He gave me tips on how to do breathing exercises, and explained some of the physiological reasons as to why it works. Which was nice, as I’d never thought about that before.

No idea how I feel about it past that.

So, as some of you know, I have sort of stumbled face first into being president of a club. The added pressure, among other things, has done horrible things to my already fucked brain chemistry, and I’ve been having panic attacks over it.

Today I went in to talk to my adviser, who is also the faculty for the club. I wanted to be upfront about it - I have panic attacks, this is stressing me out, I’ll do the best I can but I don’t know if that will be enough.

It went well. She was understanding - said there had been other club leaders with anxiety issues, told me about things I shouldn’t worry about and reminded me that this was to gain experience and have fun. And she said if there was anything she could do to help, or if there was anything that she was doing wrong, let her know.

And I appreciate that. So yeah. I think I might be able to handle this.
