This is for
nenya85 as she is starting a new job soon. I want to scribble something for you, N love, so here's a Roy fic.
Sunset
Fullmetal Alchemist
G
Precanon
The sun is in his eyes as he looks over the city, and Roy covers his face with one hand as he stands on the steps of Eastern HQ. It’ll be his HQ, as soon as the orders are processed, as soon as he can earn the loyalty of someone other than Hawkeye, as soon as he can *climb these goddamned stairs*.
He huffs a bit, annoyed that the climb and the sun are making him feel sweaty - not nervousness, of course, he wasn't nervous at all. Hawkeye, well, she doesn't smile at him, doesn't smile much these days (no one did, after Ishval) but he knows her well enough by now to guess that the crinkles at the corners of her eyes means that she would be smiling. He'd like to be able to make her smile again, one day, but that will have to wait until he can unmake the country, at least a little bit.
He turns from the sun - it'll make for a hell of an impression, coming in with the sunset at his back, it's why he picked this time - and adjusts his hair and his uniform until he sees Hawkeye nod out of the corner of his eye. He nods in return, and steps forward to knock on the door of his new post.
The sun is behind him and Hawkeye is at his side, and right now, Roy Mustang is ready to change the world. But for now, he'll be content to change just the bit that he's in.
For now.

Date: 2011-08-08 06:11 pm (UTC)I loved the picture of Roy about to take on the military without their realizing it, in the moment of his taking up the Eastern command. I could picture the steps instantly – they’re part of one of my favorite scenes when Roy and Ed sit on them in the rain after the episode where the girl gets turned into a chimera of her dog. And I could definitely see him timing his arrival to coincide with sunset for maximum drama and effect. He really does have that show-off side to his character. And of course I liked Riza slightly to his back (the better to protect him) and slightly to the side.
In the irony department, my new job is within a massive city bureaucracy, although, hopefully, not run by homoculi.

(Though to be fair, in my head, as soon as he walked in Brennan was all, "Close the door, I can't see in the glare you idiot..." which rather spoiled the effect.) And yeah, the steps are a very poignant image, really - and very, very tall.
....beware of unsettlingly adorable small children? Seriously, good luck!
