Well, I haven't typed up any fics to post in here, yet. I'll try to get some of that Death Note au  (that needs a name) typed tonight, though.

*thinks*  I'll talk about that for a moment, then.

A week or so ago, I finally got around to reading the very end of the Death Note manga. This involved a some "Squee!", some "Nooooo!", and lots of "WTF? Light you're supposed to be smarter than that damn it!" *grumbles*

Afterwards, I was talking with my dear friend Archie about how neither of us particularly like Near, and how he's not as good as L. So I asked who would be, and Archie responded, "Good!Light." My fanficcing brain instantly thought, "I must write that."

So I am.

Keep in mind, this is Good!Light, not Amnesia!Light, and takes place after That Which Shall Not Be Spoiled. Probably well into the second half, though.

Talk more after I've actually typed and posted some of the thing, though.

*is a dear friend*

Good!Light is a concept that you would need to develop yourself, since he doesn't really exist in canon, not in the sense that would try and make himself a true successor to L, anyway.

But you know that already.

So the AU aspect would be something that occurs before the warehouse confrontation to make him turn away from his life as Kira in favour of L's idea of what justice should be.

And then he'd need some way of proving that he wasn't Kira, in order to avoid having that same justice applied to him by Near/Mello et al.

But then, you know that too, so, I've sort of lost track of why I started writing this. Oh well...

Well, getting or losing a note doesn't (to our knowledge) change someone's basic personality, but Amnesia!Light isn't evil to me. Arguably still unstable, but not evil. I think that it won't be too hard to develop. *already has an idea or two*

...Hmm. I'm not sure if Light's justice will be the same as L's. He is not the same man, after all, for all their similarities. I suspect he will have a different focus.

As for Near/Mello...Well, I know he'll need to avoid them somehow (to say nothing of Ryuk) but I don't want to have him hiding his past. I don't know why, but that seems rather distasteful to me. If nothing else, he'll have to solve the case somehow...I wonder if Mikami would act as a double?

Amnesia!Light isn't evil to me. Arguably still unstable, but not evil. I think that it won't be too hard to develop.

Well, that's why this fic is within the realms of possibility; you can make non-amnesiac-but-still-good!Light without constructing a new personality for him, and apparently already have some idea about how to go about it.

I'm not sure if Light's justice will be the same as L's. He is not the same man, after all, for all their similarities. I suspect he will have a different focus.

Light's sense of justice probably wouldn't be the same as L's, but it'd be a damn sight closer than it is in canon, is what I was getting at.

As for Near/Mello...Well, I know he'll need to avoid them somehow (to say nothing of Ryuk) but I don't want to have him hiding his past. I don't know why, but that seems rather distasteful to me.

The thing about this is, he's gonna have to hide his past, because otherwise he'd either have to confess to being Kira, resulting in either death or incarceration, or kill off anyone that might uncover the truth and then take up the position, which would sort of go against the kind of person he's trying to become. The only way he's going to be rid of suspicion is by proving that he's not Kira, which would almost certainly require finding someone else to act as Kira for the investigators.

To that end, Mikami would do anything he asked, provided it were physically possible, and Light could convince him that he was doing God's work.

This Comment Has Spoilers. :-P

When I first read the 12th manga, I did a lot of shrieking and screaming and sobbing manically and sniffling. I felt -so- bad for Light, yet, in a way the death was very beautiful. Not because he lost, but I think the ending illustrates something deeper. All of the main players in the Death Note story, the geniuses for sure - Light, L, Near, and Mello - they are all bastards, in my opinion, but they are fighting for a cause that they believe is right. Ryuk's part in the ending really stuck out to me, and how they talk about how when every human dies, there IS no heaven and hell (which represent Justice) but instead, everybody goes to the same nothingness. And even though Near "wins", the victory turns sour when, in the epilogue, Matsuda mentions that the crime rate has gone up again.

For these reasons, I don't think Light was "evil". He just killed a lot of people on a holy crusade. After all, it is stated that most of the public actually supports Kira, and not out of fear, but because they like what society is becoming. Essentially two groups of people consistently hate Kira - the government and the criminal underworld.

As for Amnesia!Light... I think he's probably the best, and one of the only examples of a genuinely noble person in Death Note. He, and Soichiro Yagami, but Soichiro is a lot more conflicted than Light is. Innocent!Light is such a GOOD person, and during that point in the series we are really contrasting how morally questionable L is.

Power can change a personality, but I also don't think that it's so much a CHANGE as it is an amplifier of certain traits. Light is passionate and analytical - the Death Note emphasized these parts of his personality until he was willing to do whatever it took to win, no matter who or what came in his way.

Also... I despise Near. Grr. He's too apathetic and uncaring to be a hero!

I would love to read your fics, too. :-) Can't wait for them to get typed up!

Well, I'll be honest - I don't completely believe Ryuk when he says that there is no Heaven or Hell. First of all, Ryuk isn't going to be winning any honesty contests (Besides, watching Light spazz was probably fun). Secondly, the shingami at least are (or at least are heavily implied to be) spiritual beings. If there are spirits and thus a spiritual world, why shouldn't some humans end there? And thirdly, while this is admittedly very biased, I believe in an afterlife, so I'll obviously assume that there is one in a series. I tend to suspect that

I think he is - and this may end up as philosophical differences between the two of us more than anything. He killed a lot of people in the name of his cause, yes, but he was wrong, and quite frankly missing the point, for reasons that I'm planning to address in the fic. He may be honest, but it is possible to be honestly wrong.

As for the public, well, that's another thing I'm planning to address, but basically, I think there was an element of fear in there. And besides, the crime rate has nothing to do with the good or evil in people's hearts. People can be good and commit horrible crimes, and people can be evil and never do anything wrong. If Light wanted to create a world of good people, then he's going about it the wrong way.

Amnesia!Light is one of the most noble characters in the series, certainly. He makes me think of what he could have done if he never found the note. Can you image the work he could do for good?

True... Or perhaps it merely reveals what was always there but never had the chance to act? (That's what I usually think, at least.) You've got a point, though.

*shrug* He seemed to much like an attempt at an L replacement for me, when L cannot be replaced.

I'll try to get at least what I have so far done tonight (In between my Math homework of Doom!). I expect we'll have some differences on some things - just from reading your fics and some of you lj I know we have significant philosophical and theological differences. But it should be interesting, nonetheless.
