I'd never realized how annoying it is to work around the timing in DN before these past few days.

You see, in most series there is no sense of time. In FMA I could have Ed and Al try to ressurect their mother on Al's birthday, or the Ishvari rebellion start on New Year's, or something like that, because there is no timeline given. We don't know when anything happens so I can just make it up.

In DN I can't do that. Because in DN, events have DATES attached to them. I can't make Light's birthday or Christmas fall during the Yotsuba arc, because it doesn't and the canon dates say so. (Light and L meet in April, and the Youtsuba arc is over by the end of October) When you're trying to write a Holiday fic, this gets really, really annoying.

So if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go back and keep rereading the second arc to see when in the story Light's 25th birthday falls.

Haha. I know what you mean. Some of my older fanfiction is now inaccurate since the release of HTR13 when all those dates were assigned. I wrote one fic all about L's birthday (in three different years) but now that doesn't hold water. I guess it can be useful for a timeframe, but it also can tie you down! I've also read a number of fics where the task force celebrates Light's birthday during Yotsuba arc, or L doesn't know his real birthday (aw, poor orphan.. except, he does.) But yeah... doesn't work. I remember being uncomfortable with writing a Christmas fic, pre-Yotsuba, where L and Light are chilling because I know they wouldn't have known each other then! XD

Light turns 25 in the second arc? I thought he was 23 when he died? He died a month before his next birthday, didn't he?

It's frustrating. I was looking at Light's 18th, so I was rereading when he section where he goes to the College testing in January. And then it skips to April. (Did you know Light and L only knew each other for seven months at the most?)

It's useful, and interesting. It's just a bitch to work around. *sigh*

...I thought he died just after his 25th birthday. Just a moment.

^He's 23 here.... And...

^From DN13. So he died just two months after his 24th birthday. I was close. And I still need to figure out when it took place for this story.

*sigh* Turning a lump of plant matter into a diamond in a week. This is...interesting.

Wait wait wait. *stares at the scan* I'm dead certain that Near and Light confronted each other in January.... why does it say April? (even though you can't tell, I'm BRBing to check my copy of HTR)

... Okay, yeah, my copy says his death date is 1/28/2010. His birthday is 2/28/1986. I've no idea why the Onemanga translated it that way... but I remember looking into this date when I wrote a fic about Sachiko at Light's funeral.

...hmmm. Goodness this is odd. Mangafox says it's in April too, but from the rereading of the series I've been doing all day (Getting a feel for the timing and that) it seems to be in January.

Oddness. I haven't seen the official, but I'll check when I go book shopping tomorrow. However, it does look like he dies before his birthday.

...hmm. That'll take some tweaking.... Thanks for pointing that out, though! *is grateful*

Yeah, I hate when that happens...even if it's some piece of canon that only appears outside of the actual show (such as birthday profiles), it bugs me that I'm not the badfic writer I once was and could ignore it.

I never realized the whole thing between L and Light only took place in a matter of six months. It's been a while since I've read volumes one through seven, and getting caught up in the plot, I didn't notice all that.

On the one hand, it's a sign of a good author. On the other, it can get annoying. *Sigh* Ah well. I can make it work - I think.

Yeah, I hadn't either until I looked at L's death date. The end of the Yotsuba arc is mentioned by Near later, but I tend to accidentally zone out whenever he's talking so I hadn't noticed. It's amazing, really.
