Kaiba and Aoshi, please – mainly because they’re my two favorite characters – although now that I think of it, this maybe a conversation that consists mainly of grunts. Hhhmmmmnnn… if conversational threesomes are allowed add Roy Mustang to the mix!

Roy + Kaiba

"...It's called alchemy."

"Alchemy is bullshit."

A stare. "...look. Who cares how I did it. Just get out of the way so that I can light the campfire."

"I'll light it myself."

"You know how? Aren't you a businessman?"

He lights it easily. "Do you know how to do anything other than parlor tricks?"

"...of course."

"Good. Maybe you won't be entirely useless."

"...just hand me the food."

"Fine. I'll take first watch."

"Fine."

Kaiba + Aoshi (Not particularly exciting, perhaps, but....)

"Would you like some tea?"

"Fine."

"Here."

"...Thank you."

A nod. "I will go train. Would you like to join me?"

Kaiba gathers up his own kodachi. "Will you be willing to spar?"

"Of course. Come with me."

Roy + Aoshi

"...I'm sorry, but where's the next town-"

A glare. Roy notices the gravestones.

"...oh. I'm terribly sorry. I didn't realize."

"Hmph."

"...friends of yours?"

Another glare. "My men." Roy's eyes widen. "They died protecting me."

A long silence. Roy glances to the gravestones, worrying his lip in his teeth. Then he turns to them and salutes sharply before turning back.

"I hope they have found peace."

"...I'm working on it."

"Good."

"...the town's to west."

"Thank you."

I felt mildly (but only mildly) guilty for giving you three characters who are all more comfortable glaring than talking. I really love what you did because while the dialog in each one is on the sparse an halting side, with the silences and pauses as important as what’s being overtly said, each one is very different in mood and dynamics.

I like how Roy and Kaiba have a challenging feel to their conversation. And I love the hint of facing an outside menace in the “Do you know how to do anything other than parlor tricks/…of course/Good” and it’s acceptance of doing whatever it takes.

In contrast, there’s a really peaceful feel to Kaiba and Aoshi, the sense that they’re not talking because they don’t need to, there’s an odd restfulness to them, and the sense that sparring is all the communication they need. (Insert obligatory fangirl squeezing over Kaiba having dual koachi).

And I like the way you highlighted the bond Roy and Aoshi share as soldiers – and as officers who haven’t always used their talents well.

I've mostly done all the rambling I had wanted to, but oh well. Yeah, Kaiba can get along with Aoshi but anyone else will have to hit him a few times before he stops growling. He and Roy would respect each other... after they fought themselves out. (Not that there's a parallel to Ed there, not at all.)

Aoshi is a warrior, and Kaiba can accept that. They'd make sense to each other on that level, I think - comfortable with the distance and the silence.

Like I said - Roy and Aoshi were my favorite, and I still feel like I didn't do it justice. Then again, that might just be Roy - he definitely has a sense of "Is this all I can do?" to him, there.
