Over Spring Break, I played Pokemon: White. Behold my spoilerific reaction.

It is fucking awesome.

I actually rather like that we don't get any of the old Pokemon until after the main plot - it makes it more of a fresh experience. I couldn't glut my team with all of my old favorites, didn't end up going, "...you know what, I've caught a geodude a lot of fucking times...." Also, I love Sigylph. For so many, many reasons.

The gyms are great. We actually have a black gym leader! (I think my actual words were "Oh my god there are black people in this game.") And I love the fact that gym leaders aren't just challenges - they're community leaders, helping defend the city and manage resources. They're a lot more detailed than before. The Walking Texan Stereotype Clay was a little annoying, but actually pretty badass by the end. And the gyms themselves are fucking awesome. (Cannons! Fucking Cannons!)

N is amazing and huggable and I kind of want to write fic for him. He's so sweet and sad. I love the premise of this game - people have been calling Pokemon "virtual cockfighting" ever since the first game was released, but this is the first time that's really been addressed in game. N's ability to talk to Pokemon is never really explained - that might be my fic, come to think of it.

The plot is a lot more natural than it is in most of the previous games - the player actively pursues the villains rather than chasing badges and the plot just sort of following them. The whole badges quest is secondary to the actual *story*, and I think that's the most radical and important change. The plot is something more than becoming the champion (that's not a plot, that's a premise.) I mean, hell, I think my jaw dropped when I beat the game *without* becoming champion.

Our best friends/rivals actually act like our friends instead of just occasionally showing up and battling us! And Cheren is cute - the sort of fussy, well intentioned jerk that I'm kind of soft for. I wanted to hit Bianca for a while, but she got better.

I sort of ship Cheren/Alder. But N/Lead more.

I was sort of getting a bit of a Final Fantasy feel from bits - the final castle, especially. (And, you know, Ghestis' coat. Though that was blending into YGO) I kept expecting random encounters in the castle. This is of course not a bad thing, but unexpected - the feel of these two series don't normally overlap.

So yeah, fucking love this game, and it's possibly one of my favorites in the series so far.
