It's not abortion or creationism or homosexuality that fucks things up for these people - it's the need to fight, the need to go out and convert people and that is their only purpose in life. It's that salesman mentality - everyone is either a coworker or a mark, a customer, and it stops them from identifying with others as equals. In some causes, it stops them from identifying others as human beings at all.
I'd say in some cases it goes even further, to the point where they don't even see themselves as humans, but An Extension Of God's Will, which is why it has to inform literally everything they do. This gets even worse when you add in the Rapture element, because you wind up with people who've convinced themselves that life isn't worth living in any meaningful way because Jesus is going to kill them soon. And they have no problem with that, because once they're dead, that's when Real Life starts, and it'll be better because none of the Bad Things That They Disapprove Of will be there.
They're basically trying to play just enough of the regular game that they can unlock Easy Auto Mode and start over with the challenge taken out.
