Really, besides the whole Well He's Obviously Evil aura that Seph has, he's not actually done much beside sort of float. It's one of the instances where I feel like the original canon *has* to come into play, because there's no explanation for the hate otherwise.
Sephiroth wouldn't care, perhaps. Cloud would be kind of appalled, but he would be appalled by the whole situation. (I saw a fic where Cloud wore that and was molested by Everyone. Just a moment.... you've probably already seen it, but:
