this week, young adult fantasy
Oct. 26th, 2013 06:28 pmI had three tests this week. I know that I got a 76 on one of them, which is pretty damn good considering that I got a 50 on the last one I took in that class. I am mostly attributing this to not having had a career fair immediately before taking the test this time.
Haven't gotten the other two back, but, promising.
As previously stated: I have an interview! I am currently researching the company. Slightly terrified, because it's an honest to god real interview but. Am currently trusting that I will not explode in the process.
Every semester there's a children's book sale in the education building. As is traditional, I spent way too much money on whatever young adult fantasy caught my eye. I then spent the rest of the week inhaling them several of them. While this year did not result in anything as marvelous as Whales on Stilts, which is still one of my favorite things ever, I did find some fun things.
I read The Shadows, which is something like off-brand Coraline. Which is perfectly allowable of course, especially since Olive is smart and stubborn and inventive, all of which are things I approve of in a YA female protagonist. Also it actually had me guessing at points as to what was going on, which was more than I had expected.
I also read Villain School: Good Curses Evil. Despite it's appalling cover art and occasional blatant plot device, it is a lot of fun. Basically: sometimes evil parents find that their children aren't quite evil enough for their liking. Thus, the send them to what amounts to a Reform School for Young Villains. It is led by Professor Snape. I mean, his name is Veldin Deadthorn, but trust me, it's Professor Snape. Not!Snape has a son who attends this school, the lead character, who longs for his father to approve of him. But since he can't Evil his way out of detention, the chances of that are somewhat slim.
It's adorable and cheesy and kind of ridiculous, but a lot of fun. I think I'll grab the next one in the series some time.
After that I've been rereading Thud and Snuff, two of my favorite Discworld novels. Because Vimes ftw.
