I went to see a stage version of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory today! It was directed by a friend of mine, so I may have been a bit biased, but I think it worked out well. Simplified sets - but then again, fantasy is hard to do on stage. Wonka himself was fantastic - I'd never realized how casually sociopathic he was. The singing was a little blurry at times - a bit hard to make out. But it worked out fine.
And of course because I'm me, I'm contemplating how bloody easy it would be to turn that into horror. (It's probably already been done.) I mean, a strange man who lives alone offering children candy so they'll come into his house? Creepy is built into the damn thing...
And damn, I miss doing theater. Might have to look into doing some at college. It feels weird watching a program from the audience.
