I see what you mean about Ryuk valuing entertainment above everything else. Yet, he didn't even tell Light the "truth" at first, he simply said that Light wouldn't be allowed in heaven or hell. Then Light smiled and said something like, "I get it - there is no heaven or hell, is there?" And Ryuk had this surprised look on his face, and said, "I thought all humans believed in that crap!" or whatever it was. And the Death Note says itself - I think it's as blunt as, "When all humans die, they become nothingness."
I guess I see no reason to think that it isn't true (though some of my favorite fanfics play with the idea of Light and L in an afterlife). Also, I think the concept of "nothingness beyond life" is just so appropriate for everything Death Note was about - people running around wildly, screaming about justice and righteousness, good and evil - and in the end, the Shinigami have the last laugh, because none of those concepts exist beyond the mortal's life. In the end there is no judgment, no heaven or hell - just natural decomposition. The plot was ALL about these complex and adverse ideals - to me, it's just the most awesome irony that in the end, they were all deluding themselves. XD
