it only really occurred to me a few hours after i'd typed up the original post - which is why this is separate.
tbh, digital is actually - potentially kind of worse? destroying a physical copy of a work is bad, but people can hide copies, preserve books where they can't be harmed. but with digital - there may only /be/ the one copy. A copy that can be accessed by a thousand people at the same time, but a single copy. If that copy is deleted, then there's no chance to preserve it.
