He didn't mind dying in the end - the kid was going to live and the others were out, because they were so much stronger than him, and his wife was waiting for him.
He believes in an afterlife. He has to, otherwise there would be no hope for anyone.
He thinks, dying, the thought that they were okay somewhere must have been where it started.
People flinched when he showed h is locket. He thought it must have been because his son was so beautiful.
The sin is tied to innocence, childishness. Maybe it was the make-believe that made him such a strong deadman.
