Well, movie canon does say that Al's been known to go hungry before... Presumably some evil villain put them in boxes and scattered them across the worlds. Just, yanno, for lulz.

That could work, though I'll confess that I kind of like Xigbar's speaking style just because it totally clashes with his appearance and role in the story. (BBS backstory, you are a friggin' goldmine.)
