Yoinked from serria .
1. How did you first get into Death Note?
I read the first chapter in a volume of Shonen Jump that a friend had. I think I was thirteen. No, fourteen. Went all omgepic. Raved for days, but didn’t actually get a copy of the manga for a while. Have been hooked since.
2. What was your first thought about it?
I think it was about, “…oh holy fuck.” I thought it was the most amazing thing I’d ever seen. The first chapter where Light realizes that the notebook is real…that image has stuck in my head for years.
3. Did the shinigami freak you out at first?
No, not in the slightest. At that point in my life, mind you, I’d already read Hellsing and the Inferno, among other things. My response was more, “oh, hey, shiny,” than “…eeep.”
4.How about the power of the Death Note?
A little bit. It was tempting, and it still is – thus the terror.
What do you think of...
Raito?
Fascinating and tragic. My favorite character and always has been. I know I probably shouldn’t, but I admire him – not his ideals, but his trickery and his skill. But I always end up admiring con-men despite my best efforts. I identify strongly with him – which is why the second arc is hard to read. I wince every time he fumbles. He’s a gorgeous mind , and it’s a pity he twists himself into destruction.
Ryuuzaki / L?
Other favorite character, here. Both absolutely fun and a little bit terrifying – an amazing mixture of contradictions and masks. He is at once the law and the breaker of laws; the champion of social order and the outsider that questions social rules. He’s completely pragmatic and I envy that as well – it would make things a lot easier.
Misa?
I feel sorry for her. She was as guilty as Light – perhaps even more, because she wasn’t doing it to save the world – but he also used her and twisted her so much. In some ways she’s purer – at least she didn’t pretend that she was doing it for holiness. She had a lot of flaws, but unlike Light, hypocrisy wasn’t one of them.
Matsuda?
He’s awesome, but in some ways he’s one of the sadder characters. He’s innocent and trusting – and that trust is betrayed. His belief is broken – if Light could turn out evil, then everyone else is fucked. I want to hug him rather badly. He’s also the most normal person in the cast, and is thus one of the more important ones.
Sayu?
Poor girl. She goes through so much, and purely due to her family. I hope she recovers in the end.
Remu?
She’s interesting and quite sad. I think she doesn’t really know who she is, which makes her hard to write – it’s not like the shinigami realm provides much opportunity for self discovery. Still, dying for love.... she’s kinder than some of the humans.
Mello / Mero?
Fun bastard. A bit screwy and I wish he got more screen time – or at least more development. His narration was part of why I liked AN… Tragic, but most people are.
Near / Nia?
Arrogant and never pays for it. I would like him better if the brat would fuck up once or twice…
Do you think...
Raito is doing what's right for Japan?
No. You cannot save the world by refusing the humanity of an entire section of the human race, regardless of what they’ve done. And true redemption does not come through fear.
That L's the rightful savior?
Fuck no, and he’s not supposed to be. He’s not a savior and doesn’t pretend to be – he is order and law, which is not always just and not always salvation. Sometimes they are, and L tries to fall on that side, but he doesn’t always.
That L is still alive?
In a fanfic near you.
That Misa is a little too obsessed with Raito?
A little? Admittedly, she gets better as she grows older…but still.
That Mero / Mello is on crack?
Nope. He’s twisted and off balance, but not on drugs.
That Nia / Near is the right successor of L?
No, but that’s my inner pouting fangirl talking. He might be, eventually, but as he stands no – he’s not fitting.
That Matsu should stop hitting on Sayu?
No, I think they’re kind of cute. Yeah, it’s mostly because he wants to be a part of the family …but they could both do a lot worse, and Matsuda dearly cares about the whole family.
That Mello is insane?
A little bit, but more impulsive and dedicated to foolhardy plans than anything. He’s one of the saner geniuses – just twisted.
That L is related to Nia and Mero?
Only if they were all grown in test tubes from the same base DNA. Otherwise – where’s the fun in it?
That Misa is annoying as hell?
She started out that way, but now she’s just sad. Poor girl. …though first arc her is still a little annoying.
That Raito sucks?
In what meaning of the word? *grin* Metaphorically? No. Literally? Quite possibly.
That L is a little weird?
Yeah, that’s what being a super genius tends to do. He’s weird in a good way.
That the police should leave Kira alone?
And surrender order to a vigilante they can’t and shouldn’t trust? Fuck no.
What do you think about WtF changing everyone's name to English?
*shrug* These things happen. As long as we don’t need a glossary to know who’s who, I don’t care.
Is Death Note getting boring now?
Nope.
Characters / Favorites...
Favorite character?
I have to pick one? Damn… *laughs* Probably Light and L, as a matched set.
Favorite minor character?
Aizawa or Ide. They’re both such epic guys, and they don’t get near enough love. They’re quick and independent, and very good at their jobs, and those get points with me.
Least favorite character?
*shrug* Not sure. Probably Near, but that’s relative to the rest. I’m pretty tolerant of characters.
Character that's useless?
Hmm….I don’t know. Matt, maybe. But even he has his place, as little as it is.
Most interesting character?
Light, easy. Though L is, of course, second. Every one’s pretty interesting, though.
Who is smarter : Raito or Ryuuzaki?
I think they’re about equal, but not the same. L deals with facts, Light deals with people. Light is a bit quicker, but not by much – and L is much calmer.
Who is more clever : Mero or Nia?
Near, technically, but I think they’re about equal as well. Mello would probably be pretty damn impressive if he ever slowed down to think.
Favorite shinigami?
Hmm. Tie between Ryuk and Rem. Probably Ryuk,
Most insane character?
Light almost by default, though he’s almost on the other side of insanity – able to take insane thoughts and look at them rationally, make them come true. Though honestly half the cast is in the running. (To quote A, “I’m going to raise up socially awkward super genius orphans and I’m going to have them fight crime!” Wammy was a bit strange.)
Most annoying?
Near, probably, but even he grows on me after a while… Like I said, I’m pretty tolerant of characters.
Favorite volume?
Three. It’s filler, but it’s also L and Light playing psychological ping-pong, which is my main reason for reading the series. And it’s got Soichiro being a badass old guy. And I loves me some badass old guys.
Favorite scene?
L’s reveal at the college opening ceremony and Light’s resulting tantrum. I giggle every time I read it.
Least favorite scene?
Hmm….either Light’s death or the last chapter. Not really sure – most of them don’t stick out as particularly unpleasant.
Who has the best wardrobe?
Misa or Mello or Matt. I rock Goth, I rock sleazy leather, and oh god do I rock dorky goggles. But given a chance I’d probably dress like L….with Matt’s goggles.
Who has the worst taste in clothes?
Worst? Hmm….anyone in the NPA that we never see out of a suit. Though I suppose Mello sort of counts here too, due to the whole ‘looks like Madonna’ thing. (Not even Madonna should look like Madonna).
Favorite quote?
“I am L.” Volume 3. *loves that scene*
Favorite hairstyle?
L’s! I’d so wear my hair like that but it would require more gel than I really want to muck with.
