Yeah, it's. People are angry and they feel that their anger is justified, and so they're not willing to let it go. and the anger just.... spools out of control. It's becoming the norm rather than the fringe. It's combative.
(I feel like, on a macro level, it's probably some response to the growing uncertaitny of the world - terrorism and the economy and everything. Plus a growing awareness of social issues that provides people with a target. Also, more moderate people are slowly being edged out.)
With any luck, this is a phase. Fandom will, eventually, calm the hell down. If we're lucky. Until then, keep ourselves safe.
